Jesusâ Prayer for Unity Liturgical Season: Easter
Today, the Church enters the Sixth Sunday of Easter with a powerful theme: Jesusâ Prayer for Unity. In His final hours before the Passion, the Lord lifts His eyes to the Father and praysânot for miracles, not for escape, but for the unity of His disciples. This prayer, found in John 17, is a window into the sacred Heart of Christ.
He longs for unity, not merely as an ideal, but as a lived communion: the kind of unity He shares with the Father. âThat they may all be one,â He says. Why? âSo that the world may believe.â The credibility of the Gospel depends not only on what we preach, but on how we live in love and unity.
Division, bitterness, and pride disfigure the face of Christ in the world. But unityâtrue, holy, sacrificial unityâreveals Him. And such unity begins with humility, with repentance, and with a renewed devotion to the one Shepherd who binds all into one fold.
As we draw nearer to the great feast of Pentecost, let us open our hearts to the unifying fire of the Holy Spirit. The Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolicâlet us not merely profess this with our lips but witness to it in our lives.
